Harriville Lake Cottage

Owners: Pegg Monahan & Harry Wolhandler

(Sorry folks – this is just a rough draft. Final version will be up by April 1)

The area and the town

Imagine this summer’s vacation on beautiful Harrisville Pond In the picture-perfect, artist-haven, historic mill-village of Harrisville, NH, deep in the heart of the Monadnock region of Southwest New Hampshire.

ü Swim out to our raft, dock-sitting, and sunning on our private beach

ü Canoe, kayak, row, fish and sail on Harrisville Pond’s pristine waters

ü Spend evenings star-gazing, watching the moon on the water, sipping and enjoying a campfire

ü Enjoy barbecues and picnics by the shore and on the terrace

ü Accessible cottage design for Seniors and those with limited mobility

ü Children and well-behaved dogs are welcome

Seniors, children and friendly dogs are welcome. If you enjoy a quiet get-away within minutes of great attractions and no crowds, this is a perfect place for you. With both woods and lake views, miles of walking roads, hiking trails, and within a half-hour reach of local entertainment centers and tax-free New Hampshire shopping, you can have it all. Tuttle Lane, our small private road, has six homes, mostly filled with summer people. Weekdays are quiet, while weekends may be a little busier with kids and visitors up and down the road.

Local attractions…

Hike country roads and local woods trails past beaver ponds, spectacular vistas and blueberries in season

è Ten minute walk to our town’s Sunset Beach with its playground for younger kids.

è Fifteen minute walk down a wooded country road to the Harrisville General Store and Historic Harrisville mill village.

Harrisville is equally distant from Peterborough and Keene NH. Both communities offer a wide variety of entertainment and dining.  Imagine the complete array of dining facilities from humble Doug’s Dogs in Marlborough to the white-table cloth, fine Italian cuisine of Del Rossi’s Trattoria just 5 minutes away in Dublin.  Imagine taking in the professional equity theater at Peterborough Players, Tuesday evenings on the lawn listening to world-wide renowned Apple Hill classical concerts and Monadnock Music chamber music throughout the area all summer. Walk to Harrisville General Store, voted best General Store in New Hampshire.  Hike nearby Mount Monadnock and the numerous trails in and about Harrisville.

The Cottage

20190327_171320Our Harrisville Lake Cottage is brand new, now under construction and available by the week from mid-June through August.

Right now in April 2019, we can only show construction pictures and describe our cottage.  So if you have a good imagination, this web site will help you make your decision.  We built the cottage where we live, tearing down an old storage building.

The cottage is fully applianced (including dishwasher and washer/dryer), winterized, furnished and as universally-accessible, as we can make it – the bath is fully accessible, kitchen is partly accessible, ramp to front porch and zero-clearance interior thresholds.

Inside the Lake Cottage

Enjoy generous views to the lake, woods, a side lawn, a shared terrace with BBQ and picnic table that is shaded in late afternoon)

è Fully equipped Kitchen (16x16) with generous lake view of Harrisville Pond through sliding glass doors and another woods view, includes dining area, handicap accessible refrigerator, sink and dishwasher (sorry – stove is standard electric range to keep knobs at back, away from kids), generous cupboards and large pantry.

o   All bath and bed linens, kitchen supplies including cookware, dishes, etc. and spices for your home cooked meal (Pegg loves to cook – come down and borrow any spices you’re missing). Oh… and Keurig coffee maker to help start your day (coffees, teas, hot chocolate and other supplies included).

è Living room (14 x14) has two comfortable new futon couches (open into full size beds), center rug, TV for Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon streaming (but no cable or TV). And spectacular views of the lake.

è Includes wifi in cottage and on property

è Master bedroom (14x14) has a classic maple bedroom suite including queen size bed, bed stands, large dresser and double closet.

è Fully accessible Bathroom (8 x 10) includes bath tub (with accessible sliding shower seat), shower with hand-held sprayer, accessible toilet and sink, grab-bars, and stacked washer and dryer.

Beach and Lake Front Grounds

Right now, there is still ice on the lake, so imagine warm weather and beautiful swimming, boating and fishing.  We have kayaks, a canoe, a rowboat and a sailboat to share.  The lake front has a lovely terraced beach for sunning and kids’ play in the sand, a dock and a raft to swim out to.

There is a 100 foot green lawn by the lakeside with Adirondack chairs for sitting and lake watching, our favorite pastime, evening campfires with Smores and marshmallows, stars and the Milky Way overhead, and the moon shining over the pond while you enjoy a glass of wine or beer.

In summer there are lots of kids playing in the water and on the raft. We love our antique wooden sailboat, and will take you out for a sail and loan it to qualified sailors among you.

We’re your hosts, Harry Wolhandler and Pegg Monahan.

We’ve lived by the pond year-round since 2001. We’re both retired, Harry from a career as a Market Researcher and marketer, Accelara Research, and Pegg from years as a non-profit executive director for area non-profits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western NH and   Keene Senior Center. We have a sweet, kid-friendly mid-size border-collie mix dog named Sassafras and four grown children, four grandchildren and numerous grand pets.
